-Festive tips for the holidays
Christmas really sparkles in The Hague. The holiday season is a wonderful time to spend in our royal city by the sea. The shops in the fairytale-like inner city are stocked with festive gifts while the beach invites you for a breath of fresh air. We show you the best places for shopping, Christmas markets, outdoor ice skating, family friendly theatre performances, Carol concerts, New Year's Eve parties and other fun winter events.
The Hague is the ideal city for Christmas shopping. It's small historic city centre welcomes you seven days a week to its stylish boutiques and many flagship stores. Typical 'Hague chic' can be found in and around the Court District and Denneweg where colourful twinkling lights dance along the streets. For hip and happening stores the place to be is the Prinsestraat and the Oude Molstraat.
Make Christmas more magical with a trip to one of The Hague's family-friendly Christmas shows. There's theatre big and bright enough to keep little children enthralled and performances sweet and subtle enough to entertain the whole family. Here are our tips for the best family-friendly theatre shows this Christmas.
With the most historic sites per square meter in the Netherlands, The Hague oozes culture and history. The majority of museums and attractions in The Hague are open on Christmas Eve (24 December), Boxing Day (26 December) and New Year's Eve (31 December), though opening hours may vary. If you're planning to visit on one of these days, we recommend checking the museum's website beforehand for alternative public holiday opening hours.
Celebrate Christmas like a royal this year! The city centre of The Hague continues to exude the allure befitting of a royal city. Stroll through the historical streets and soak up the atmosphere of bygone days. Visit the palaces where magnificent parties were held, and feel like a king or a princess.
Alternate your Christmas activities with a refreshing walk at our 11 kilometres long beach. Scheveningen, the best known seaside resort on the Dutch coast, is just ten minutes away from the city centre. Visit on 1 January, when the largest New Year's dive in the Netherlands takes place and over 10,000 people jump into the icy seawater.
Take your time to explore our majestic city. Stay in one of the many luxurious hotels in the beautiful historic city centre or at the lovely beach. Pamper yourself with a night or two at the monumental Hotel Des Indes, the tastefully decorated Palace Hotel or the famous Kurhaus in Scheveningen.
