AfroVibes Festival - Venus versus Modernity
In Venus versus Modernity, South African Lebo Mashile and Ann Masina dive into the image of the Black women's body with the impressive and painful story of Saartjie Baartman, who was exhibited as an African "freak" woman in Europe in the 19th century.
In this black comedy they turn this historical story upside down and hold up a mirror to the audience with theatre, spoken word and opera singing and the necessary self-mockery. Ann Masina embodies the goddess Venus with her physical presence and a full choir with her powerful singing voice. Venus versus Modernity shows that the story of Saartjie Baartman still applies to black women in our current world. The show was developed at The Center for The Less Good Idea in Johannesburg by William Kentridge.
Preceding the show is a free accessible introduction at 20:00 in the foyer of Theater aan het Spui. After the performance there is a post show talk with the makers. Followed by an afterpary in collaboration with iAfrica Filmfestival in the foyer from 22.00.
