In 2021, Voorlinden presents the first solo show of the legendary American painter Alex Katz (1927) in the Netherlands. He has emerged in the fifties and sixties – at the height of abstract expressionism and pop art – and for decades he has been striving beyond his contemporaries with his timeless paintings that cannot be captured in any genre. His highly recognisable signature is characterised by large-format canvases that look like billboards, on which he applies paint with limited visual means and colour fields.<br />
Katz is interested in capturing fleeting moments, as it were fragments from a film or poem. His most important muse is his wife Ada, whom he has captured in a grand yet intimate way in over 200 paintings. The exhibition at Voorlinden will consist of an ahistorical selection of both early and recent works, including the dynamic Homage to Degas 14 from 2018. The museum is looking forward to introducing the Dutch public to this master painter who is unique in his pictorial language. Voorlinden is one of the few Dutch museums that collects works by Katz.
