Vlaggetjesdag Royal

Bookmark

Following Vlaggetjesdag in Scheveningen, a downtown style edition takes place on Sunday June 17th. in the Hofkwartier, the Royal quarter behind the Grote Kerk: A lively event with music performances, a food festival, childrens’ activities and a market stashed with fresh products and life style items. All themed around sea and beach life.
The Hofkwartier is the very spot where in the old days fresh products arrived into The Hague: Fresh fish from Scheveningen and vegetables and fruits from the Westland. Street names still refer to this:
Visbanken ( Fish Market) , Dagelijkse Groenmarkt ( Daily Greenmarket) en Riviervismarkt ( River Fish market). This summer, with Feest aan Zee en Vlaggetjesdag in Scheveningen, there now is a new chapter to this tradition of connectedness: Vlaggetjesdag Royal, downtown.
At the Veenkade canal the ‘the seasons’ first barrel of haring” comes ashore and will be presented to the King and Queen of the Hofkwartier – the Royal Quarter at 12.00 p.m. in the adjacent Paleistuinen – The Royal Gardens.

Throughout the Hofkwartier are performances of artists and fishermens’ choirs, the streets are dotted with whitewashed wooden houses and market stalls stashed with fresh food- and artisanal products.

The Papestraat creates its own Mediterranean atmosphere with wine tastings and terraces. On the Torenplein, in the Nobelstraat en de Korte Molenstraat is a Foodfestival, where apart from performances, there will be children’s activities : in the rarities shop - Natural Choice - author Tjerk Noordraven signs his horror children’s books while at the square extraordinary figures like a faun, a fortune teller and countess Dracula make a party of it. Children can participate in a seamens’ grave mummie-race. Scattered around the streets, crafsmen will show their skills to the public.

On the court of the Venduehuis a more than 10 meters wide panorama of sea and shore, by five The Hague artists, lined with a famous poem will be shown.

The event takes place from 11.00 – 18.00 uur in the streets and on the squares of het Hofkwartier: (Prinsestraat, Nobelstraat, Molenstraat, Annastraat, Oude Molstraat en Veenkade, Torenplein en Kerkplein).
