The exhibition OUTSIDER Art Cosmic encounters with works of art by Paul Dekker and a collection of art work from the Reakt Anders Bekeken Art Studios inspired by the work by Paul Dekker can be seen in the Atrium from the 18th of March to the 29th of March 2019. The exhibition coincides with The Week of Psychiatry.
Paul Dekker (1952-2014)
Paul Dekker worked as an artist at the Reakt art project, Anders Bekeken. Not only an artist, he also suffered from mental health issues and underwent treatment for this at Parnassia. This was beneficial and necessary, but his finest moments lay, for the greater part, in creating art. He made colourful paintings with reference to spirituality and matter. The Paul Dekker Foundation, founded after his death, draws our attention to the work of artists with mental health issues.
Artists from Anders Bekeken
The artists from Anders Bekeken have been invited seek inspiration in the work by Paul Dekker and the results are revealed in this exhibition. The art works can be moving or frightening, endearing or distressing but always know how to make contact with the viewer. The exhibition shows a variety of work in different techniques: oil paint, watercolour or acrylic paint.
What the artists have in common: they are all part of what is called, Outsider art, an art movement consisting of people who are often not formerly trained as artists. Some artists find inspiration within themselves and show their imagination, dreams and feelings in works of art. Others observe the outside world and create work from experiences, observations and the environment. They develop their creativity outside the boundaries and out of sight of the more acknowledged art circle.
The Week of Psychiatry
The official opening of the exhibition, Monday, the 25th of March at 17.00 pm, coincides with the start of the Week of Psychiatry.
