In 'Sounds Familiar' Joyce Overheul (b. 1989, 's-Hertogenbosch) exposes the social interactions that lie behind familiarity. At the start of 2019 she travels to Tehran and witnesses the aftermath of the protests against the mandatory hijab (headscarf) and clothing restrictions for inhabitants. With soft materials she distorts the sometimes harsh reality. Overheul works with political sensitivities from the societal undercurrent. Behavior and manipulation are recurrent themes. The exhibition subscribes to a wish for collective signification, but also shows the loneliness of this process when human communication predominantly takes places between the lines and through intervention by interfaces.
Lauwer is accessible by tram 16 / bus 24 – 1 stop prior to the Gemeentemuseum.
