In the Muzee Scheveningen summer exhibition, the emphasis is on 'the ordinary man', who earned his living on the beach and on the boulevard from bathers and beach visitors. These Scheveningen locals practiced trades that were characteristic of the seaside resort and in many cases have now completely disappeared. Beach trades such as male and female bathing assistant, donkey driver and ice-cream vendor are reviewed. Who were these people? And how did they experience the rise of the resort over the past 200 years? Working for the Tourist offers a glimpse into an underexposed target group that made the seaside resort of Scheveningen so popular.
Muzee Scheveningen is collaborating with author Danny Verbaan to bring you this exhibition. He will write an accompanying book about the workforce in the seaside resort. The exhibition and publication need to become more than a historical sketch of the development of the seaside resort. It is the intention that through personal histories it will become a lively story of previously unknown people and anecdotes.
