Along The Hague's shoreline

This beach walk takes you along the multi-kilometre-long coast of The Hague, from Scheveningen beach and harbour, via the Zuiderstrand and the Westduinpark, to Kijkduin. On the way you can choose a quiet route or, if you prefer, an alternative route with more attractions and beach bars. Once you arrive in Kijkduin, you can easily return to the start by public transport or take the bus to The Hague city centre.

  1. We advise you to switch on the GPS on your phone, so that your location shows up in the full-screen map.
    • If you came by public transport, take tram 1 or 9 from NS Station Den Haag HS or Den Haag Centraal Station in the direction of Scheveningen Zwarte Pad. This is the end stop where you get out. Walk to the left past the Carlton Beach Hotel towards the sea. Once at the boulevard, turn left towards the Pier.
    • If you came by car, park at car park Parking Zwarte Pad (free between 1 from 1 November to 1 March) or Parking Scheveningen Bad on Zwolsestraat. From Parking Zwarte Pad, walk straight on over the dunes to the beach where you go left towards the Pier. From Parking Scheveningen Bad, walk towards the high-rise flats. Cross the street towards De Pier with the Ferris wheel, until you are on the boulevard. The Zwarte Pad beach is on your right, but turn left onto the boulevard.
    • This walk can also be done as an extension of our dunes route. Point 9 of the route is the Zwarte Pad.
  2. 1. Zwarte Pad

In the summertime, you will find a range of trendy beach clubs and in winter you will have an uninterrupted view of the coast.
  3. Before starting this beach walk, you have two options: you can walk along the boulevard towards the lighthouse, or along the beach.
    1. The route along the boulevard takes you past various restaurants on the way to the Pier, then further along the boulevard with its many attractions.
    2. The route along the beach also takes you towards the Pier, which you can access from the beach via a small flight of steps. If you take this option, you can ignore the instructions below and walk for almost 2 km along the beach towards the lighthouse.
  4. 2. The Pier

The Netherlands most well-known coastal attraction offers a fantastic view.
    • If you have any questions about The Hague, go to the Palace Promenade shopping centre, diagonally opposite the Pier.
    • Walk straight through the shopping centre until you reach the AKO. Staff from the VVV (tourist information office) will be able to advise you personally during the holiday season and on national holidays.
    • If you do not wish to go to the VVV information point, continue walking from the Pier along the boulevard towards the classic Kurhaus Hotel with its striking dome.
  5. 3. Tourist information agency - AKO Scheveningen

Tourist office staff are available during the holiday season and on national holidays.
  6. 4. Grand Hotel Amrâth Kurhaus

An icon on the North sea: take a look inside the historic Kurzaal.
    • After the Kurhaus, walk on further along the boulevard.
  7. 5. SEA LIFE Scheveningen

Optional: take an amazing look at the underwater life in our oceans.
    • After SEA LIFE, walk towards the striking Herring Eater at the boulevard's sculpture park.
  8. 6. SprookjesBeelden aan Zee

Everyone loves Otterness' delightful fairy-tale figures.
  9. 7. Museum Beelden aan Zee

Optional: admire the interplay of sea light and sculpture here.
  10. 8. Pavilion de Witte

This former country residence was built by William I in 1827.
  11. 9. Boulevard Scheveningen

This is where the wide boulevard, designed by architect Solà-Morales, unfolds.
    • Walk on over the boulevard towards the lighthouse in the distance.
  12. 10. Scheveningen Lighthouse

You can climb it every Wednesday and Saturday afternoon.
    • About 200 metres beyond the lighthouse are several permanent beach pavilions.
  13. 11. Beach Restaurant De Waterreus

Time for a break at this permanent beach restaurant.
  14. 12. Hart Beach Quiksilver Surfschool

Or to relax with a drink or snack at this permanent surfing spot.
    • Both options (beach and boulevard route) come together at Hart Beach.
    • Turn left at the small roundabout between the two dune dikes towards the harbour.
    • Go straight on keeping the Eerste Haven (first harbour) on your right.
    • After the Eerste Haven, take the road that bends to the left. (Alternatively, you can turn right before the bend, into the harbour: just walk straight on until you reach the second harbour.)
    • Turn immediately right into Schokkerweg.
    • Walk on for about 80 m until you can take the steps on the corner to your right to the Tweede Haven (second harbour).
    • Walk along the short side of the harbour, then turn right along the long side of the harbour.
    • About 75 m further on is the landing stage for the Watertaxi, which runs in the summer. Here you can choose: you can take the Watertaxi to the Zuiderstrandtheater and then take the strandslag 12 (beach path) to Zuiderstrand (South Beach), or forget the Watertaxi and just continue walking straight on through the harbour.
  15. 13. Port of Scheveningen Water taxi

Nice alternative in the summer months: get out at the theatre.
  16. 14. Scheveningen Harbour

An exceptional mix of fish traders and great restaurants.
    • Continue walking for about 500 m, keeping the water on your right, until you see several nice restaurants with a view over the marina.
  17. 15. Waterproef

Described by Michelin as the 'star of the quay'.
  18. 16. Rootz at the Harbour

Casual beer restaurant with an abundant opulent Germanic atmosphere.
  19. 17. Catch by Simonis

Excellent fish restaurant with a fantastic view.
  20. After the harbour it is again time to choose. The main route takes you over the beautiful South Beach straight to Kijkduin. The alternative route does not follow the sea, but the long-distance (LAW) path through the Westduinpark. This is a good choice if the beach is busy or in bad weather with strong winds, but you do have to follow the signs yourself in the dune area.
    • At the end of the row of restaurants at the harbour, follow the main route to the right, up the steps and over the lock.
    • Walk straight on along the harbour, keeping the water on your right.
    • When the harbour finishes, turn right, then immediately left.
    • Walk to the end of the street (about 100 m) towards the Zuiderstrandtheater in the distance.
    • At the end, turn left at the T-junction, then immediately right, along the Sluiswachtershuis (lock-keepers house).
    • Here, due to building work, you follow a temporary route around the Sluiswachtershuis and past the barrier.
    • After the barrier you will be at the Zuiderstrandtheater car park, go left.
    • Follow the road along the wall with billboards on your left and walk towards the pipe on top of a dune.
    • Leave the theatre car park here and turn right.
    • Walk straight on towards strandslag (beach path)12.
    • Once on the beach, turn left and walk over the South Beach ('Zuiderstrand') towards beach resort Kijkduin.
Below are directions for the first part of the alternative, more varied route through Westduinpark. In the dunes, you have to follow the striped trail signs of the Noordzee Kustpad (North Sea Trail).
    • After the row of restaurants at the harbour, turn diagonally left towards the brown-and-grey bricked apartment complex.
    • Go up the steps and turn right along the apartment complex.
    • Walk on for 140 m: you will see the red-and-white striped signs of the Noordzee Kustpad (North Sea Trail), a long-distance walking path that leads to Kijkduin.
    • Turn left at the T junction before the water.
    • Go over the crossing after 120 metres and go straight on with the water on your right.
    • After 200 m, turn right at the pumping station via the cycle path.
    • After a short distance on the cycle path along the pumping station, go diagonally right into the uphill dune path across the road.
    • For the rest of the route through the Bosjes van Poot and the Westduinpark, follow the red-and-white striped signs of the Noordzee Kustpad (North Sea Trail) until you arrive in beach resort Kijkduin. Walk the entire way in a south-westerly direction.
  21. 18. South Beach The Hague

Local inhabitants also refer to it as the peaceful beach, and rightly so.
  22. This route now has two options, both close to each other, but with different characters: you can walk on the beach to Kijkduin or over the up-and-down footpath immediately behind the first row of dunes.
    1. Walk straight on over the Zuiderstrand, where you will find many authentic beach pavilions in the summer months, and a clear view from Scheveningen to the Hook of Holland in the winter months.
    2. Alternatively, take a footpath from strandslag (beach path) 11 immediately behind the first row of dunes: you'll walk through Westduinpark but have plenty of sea views.
  23. In the summer months, look between beach paths 10 and 9 to see if Theo Jansen is working on his Strandbeesten (beach animals).

  24. 19. Westduinpark

This protected natural area is right on the Zuiderstrand.
    • Depending on the route you have chosen, walk across the beach or through the dunes to Kijkduin.
    • At beach path 5, just before the buildings of Kijkduin, is the beach hut of Ome Jan.
  25. 20. Beachcomber's Shed Kijkduin

Beachcomber Ome Jan displays his findings here.
    • Walk across the beach or along the rear side of the NH Atlantic Hotel towards the small lighthouse on the Kijkduin boulevard.
  26. 21. Beach Resort Kijkduin

This is a delightful holiday area located in an extensive area of dunes.
    • Walk along the boulevard with its many restaurants to the play boat at the end. The route ends here, so why not relax at one of the charming beach cafes with a view of the sea.
  27. 22. La Galleria Kijkduin

Like a cosy Italian sitting room with a view of the sea.
  28. 23. La Fontaine

Beautiful conservatory with delicious French cuisine.
  29. 24. Play boat Atlantis

End of this route - but there is a little 'bonus' for those who wish.
    • Turn right just before the play boat, then immediately left.
    • Walk past the boat on your right and along the dune path parallel with the sea.
    • After 100 metres, turn left at the beach entrance.
    • Walk about 140 m over the downward path until you see a HTM bus stop on the left: Here you can take the bus to Scheveningen orThe Hague city centre.

    • For the 'bonus', ignore the bus stop and walk on for 225 metres, partly along a cycle path.
    • At the end of this downwards path, at the large T-junction, turn right into Machiel Vrijenhoeklaan.
    • After approximately 50 metres, turn left up the long, curved steps; you are now back on the Noordzee Kustpad (North Sea Trail).
    • Follow this long-distance path for about 150 metres until you get to the circular landscape artwork with an entrance on the right. Here, and from the top of the dune higher up, you will have a delightful view of the skies and the landscape artwork.
    • After seeing the artwork, walk back to the bus stop in Kijkduin.
  30. 25. James Turrell - Celestial Vault

A magical place where you can enjoy the landscape and the skies.
  31. Buses 23, 24 and 26 leave from the final stop in Kijkduin forThe Hague city centre and Scheveningen beach. Below is our travel advice:
    • To return to the starting point, take bus 24 and change at Aert van der Goesstraat / Cornelis de Wittlaan to bus 21, or at Alexanderplein / Peace Palace to tram 1, both in the direction of the Zwarte Pad in Scheveningen.
    • You can also take bus 24 to Den Haag Centraal Station.
    • Take bus 26 for Den Haag HS Station.
