To The Beach - Cycle Route

‘To the Beach’ is the first of a total of three ‘City > Coast Routes’. All three lead from the city to the beach. The ‘To the Beach’ route is the fastest and most direct route and takes you from The Hague Central Station, via the Malieveld and Madurodam, to the Kurhaus and Pier. Although this route is fast and direct, there is plenty to see and experience on the way. In 2018 – the year of Seaside Celebrations – the route is marked by large blue pillars. They’re hard to miss. Follow the blue columns and you’ll automatically end up at the beach.

  1. 1. Malieveld

The city to beach cycle ride starts at Koekamp, in front of the Malieveld.
  2. Before leaving for the coast, we recommend stopping to take a look behind Central Station at Anna van Buerenplein.

The culinary and literary hungry – both young and old – will find their heart’s desire here.

Cycle towards the station, get off and walk through the station and you will come out at Anna van Buerenplein, where you will find MingleMush (a fine food hall), the Children’s Book Museum and the National Archives.
  3. 2. MingleMush

You will find fifteen world food stands here, as well as three bars, terraces, arcade games, a library and a stage under one roof.
  4. 3. Musée littéraire

Come and lose yourself among writers and their stories in the Museum of Literature!
  5. 4. Musée du livre pour enfants

Use your fantasy and embark on an adventure. On the way you will meet the loveliest characters: from the Hungry Caterpillar to Alfie the Werewolf.
  6. 5. Archives nationales

A thousand years of Dutch history, stored in 125 kilometres of archives.
  7. After all the cultural sights it is time to get on your bike again and enjoy some movement.

First, walk back the same way to Central Station and then turn left onto the cycle path on Bezuidenhoutseweg.
Turn right in front of the tram rails onto Laan van Reagan and Gorbatsjov and keep right.
  8. 6. Paviljoen Malieveld

For the best mini-pancakes, pancakes and Old Dutch waffles.
  9. After Paviljoen Malieveld, continue cycling along Laan van Reagan en Gorbatsjov beside Malieveld (on your right).

Turn left at the traffic lights at the main crossroads.

Cross Koningskade and turn left onto Prinsessegracht. You will find the following sights virtually immediately to your right.
  10. 7. Museum Meermanno | Huis van het boek

The oldest book museum in the world.
  11. From Museum Meermanno cycle back to the crossroads where you just crossed. Cross Koningskade again and turn left.

Next, cross the main crossroads and continue following the cycle path.

Keep following this road until you arrive at a roundabout. Turn left here for one of the best (and smallest) attractions in the Netherlands.

Would you prefer to keep cycling? Then go straight over the roundabout and continue your cycle ride along Nieuwe Parklaan.
  12. When you see the flyover with the special sun (to your right) you will know that you have cycled over half of your route.

  13. 8. Madurodam

Madurodam tells the great stories of the Netherlands.
  14. After a visit to Madurodam, cycle back to the roundabout and turn left onto Nieuw Parklaan. Once you reach Cafe/restaurant De Boshut you can either cycle straight ahead, turning left at Badhuisweg or go right to visit the Atlantic Wall Museum. From here continue straight ahead and you will see the Kurhaus appear ahead of you. Then you know that you have reached the beach!
  15. 9. Atlantikwall Museum Scheveningen

Visit one of the original German bunkers from the Second World War.
