DNR Filmclub | Tribute to Brain De Palma: The Untouchables

Bewaren
Brian De Palma is one of the most prolific, poorly understood and controversial directors in the history of American cinema. His career has spanned three decades and includes tremendously important works. De Palma’s characters, the phrases they utter and the philosophies they propitiate have been absorbed into our cultural vocabulary. Through persistence and longevity De Palma has created a body of work that is as moody and recalcitrant as it is aesthetically unassailable.

In spite of his popularity, De Palma is admittedly notorious. He has been accused of misanthropy, misogyny, cynicism — and their opposites: of 'loving women', of humanism, idealism and gushing romanticism. He is known alternately as a dispassionate plagiarist of Hitchcock and a maverick, a wicked satirist, an avant-gardist, a 'sell-out', a fiercely independent iconoclast and an intellectual; a creator of intensely personal or detached, deterministic and cerebral movies.

During February we will screen four of his virtuous masterworks that mark the pick of his career.

The Untouchables (1987)
Elliot Ness is an FBI agent with a mission. He is going to bring down the head of the most powerful crime family in America, Al Capone. Whatever it takes. Super slick aesthetics and loaded with artful touches and film references, Brian DePalma's classical gangster thriller is a sharp look at period Chicago crime, featuring excellent performances from a top-notch cast including Kevin Costner, Sean Connery, and Robert De Niro as Al Capone. While overtly melodramatic, 'The Untouchables' is a perceptive and hard-driven action film. It's an intriguing character confrontation, loaded with ironies, both personal and social.
