Anticipating the afterlife, Christmas used to be musically exuberantly celebrated. The tension between heaven and earth, the beginning of something new and looking forward to eternal life, is beautifully preserved, especially in much North European music of the 17th century.

Even today, it still sounds incredibly festive - Christmas! Both in the German-speaking region and in the Low Countries, there is an unprecedented amount of often unknown Christmas repertoire. Beautiful pieces telling the feast in moving cantatas, concertos, motets and instrumental sonatas. Again and again, we hear the story of the star and the hour of expectation: Sternstunde.

Ensemble Polyharmonique is a soloist collective and rising star in the German vocal Baroque sky. Their speciality is the early Baroque, German-language repertoire. Together with them, Holland Baroque presents an imaginative programme of composers including Hammerschmidt, Knupfer, Praetorius, Rosenmüller and Schütz. Dutch repertoire from the same era will also be featured. The whole is laced with folk Christmas carols in good Northern European tradition. The old Christmas call "Noe, Noe!" spreads the good news with music that sparkles and warms.
