Joris Escher, the second cousin of M.C. Escher, has fond memories of his great uncle. When he found two unknown drawings by M.C. Escher, at the bottom of a 19th-century Chinese lacquer box, he begins a journey of discovery into the origins of the graphic artist's fascinations. Who was his uncle Mauk and how did he become Escher? Joris wrote the book Becoming Escher about his discoveries, which was published in the Netherlands last year and will be released in America this year. Together with other objects of M.C. Escher, the drawings and the lacquer box are now being shown in a museum for the first time in this exhibition.
