Pamela Phatsimo Sunstrum creates drawings, paintings, installations and animations. Her work refers to mythology, geology and theories about the nature of the universe.
With references to literature, film, theatre and other forms of storytelling, Sunstrum builds a constantly growing narrative. Situated in environments that look futuristic and ancient at the same time, the work forms a patchwork of remembered landscapes from Sunstrum's childhood in Botswana, Canada, Sudan, Sri Lanka, Malawi and Panama, among others. With a shadowy 'cast' of characters, she explores elusive ideas about being yourself and belonging somewhere. KM21 presents Sunstrum's first solo exhibition in the Netherlands.
