Museum Beelden aan Zee - Permanente collection
18 Mar - 31 Dec
Exhibition
The collection of museum Beelden aan Zee has its origins in the private collection of married couple Theo and Lida Scholten. They bought their first sculpture in 1966. After decades of collecting hundreds of sculptures with great pleasure, the Scholtens took the initiative to found a museum for modern sculpture. The building by architect Wim Quist was opened in 1994. The entire international sculpture collection was housed in Beelden aan Zee and is the starting point for the artistic programme. The basic theme of the collection is the human figure in contemporary sculpture by artists all over the world.
Since the first sculpture was acquired in 1966, the collection of Museum Beelden aan Zee includes almost 1,000 sculptures and several hundred medals. Most of the works date from the second half of the 20th century. There are large and small sculptures, made by well-known and unknown sculptors, from all over the world and executed in a wide variety of materials.
Man - the human image - is the leitmotif in the collection of Beelden aan Zee, which includes works by sculptors as diverse as Andreu Alfaro, Armando, Atelier van Lieshout, Stephan Balkenhol, Zadok Ben-David, Fernando Botero, Caspar Berger, César, Tom Claassen, Wessel Couzijn, Tony Cragg, Eugène Dodeigne, Sigurdur Gudmundsson, Jeroen Henneman, Fritz König, Rainer Kriester, Giacomo Manzú, Igor Mitoraj, Jan Meefout, Mimmo Paladino, Charlotte van Pallandt, Jaume Plensa, Eja Siepman van den Berg, Johan Tahon, Shinkichi Tajiri, William Turnbull, Henk Visch, Tony van de Vorst, Ossip Zadkine and Cornelis Zitman.
