#17 - The Paper Ensemble & Ale Hop
Music
We can all fold a paper plane, but folding an instrument? The Paper Ensemble does just that—playing their electro-acoustic compositions on instruments made entirely of paper.
The Paper Ensemble is a project by artist and composer Jochem van Tol and musician and performer Ibelisse Guardia Ferragutti. Using their paper sculptures, they will perform work this evening in collaboration with sound artist Ale Hop, with percussion by Frank Wienk (BinkBeats) and Paul Koek. A clash between the smallest, softest sounds we can hear and the raw power of percussion and electronics.
Van Tol developed a series of paper instruments, many of which he discovered in the Japanese countryside. Together with Guardia Ferragutti, he has performed and exhibited in Japan alongside artists such as Yoko Ono, John Cage, Mamoru, Francis Alÿs, Yukio Fujimoto, Toshi Ichiyanagi, and Ken’ichi Nakagawa. In their performances, the ensemble bridges the gap between sculptor and musician, demonstrating just how much can be drawn from the use of simple materials.
