Kunstwerk van Ad van Riel over het landschap

Wherever we are, the landscape accompanies us. It opens up in vistas or, on the contrary, encloses us between trees, buildings or mountains. Always there is the horizon: the familiar anchor point of our gaze. In art as much as in everyday life. But however obvious that horizon may seem, the foundation beneath it is often forgotten. And that is precisely where artist Ad van Riel's story begins.

The exhibition “Landscapes, Views & Vistas” invites you to look beyond the horizon

The hidden foundation of the landscape

In his paintings, Ad van Riel brings to life an often invisible world: the soil beneath the landscape. Inspired by classical school charts from biology and geography lessons, he shows structures that normally remain hidden - root systems, insect corridors, layers of soil full of secrets. His work emerges in layers, with abstract forms gradually forming into recognisable patterns. This method, which he calls “pareidolia”, allows him to build landscapes from the inside out. Not the horizon, but the earth beneath it is the starting point. An ode to the invisible basis of everything that grows, moves and lives.
