Exhibition
‘Emily Hunt: More Magic’ at the Rijksmuseum House of Books in The Hague is the first solo museum exhibition by Australian visual artist Emily Hunt. Commissioned by the museum, she spent the past few months delving into the museum’s rich collection in search of magical books.
The Rijksmuseum Huis van het Boek in The Hague presents the first European solo museum exhibition by visual artist Emily Hunt. For 'Emily Hunt: More Magic', she immersed herself in the museum's rich collection, searching for magical books.
Hunt's work explores the visual history of magic. The exhibition presents a new series of artworks: ceramic sculptures, etchings, portraits, jewellery, murals and marionettes. With these, Hunt builds a bridge between ancient and contemporary ideas about magic.
The artist drew inspiration from historical figures such as Marsilio Ficino and Bernard de Montfaucon, whose work can be found in the collection. During the opening, two marionettes based on these thinkers will be brought to life in a performance with Dr. Peter Forshaw, professor of Western esotericism at the University of Amsterdam.
Emily Hunt (1981, Sydney) lives and works in Berlin. Her background as a rare book dealer influences her way of working. She combines drawings, paintings, etchings and ceramics in a personal quest for magic in text and image.
