Painting of Cornelis Elandts from Scheveningen before 1570

The exhibition Excavating the Keizerstraat is organised by The Hague Archaeology of the Municipality of The Hague and can be visited from April 13 until May 8 in the Atrium City Hall.

During construction work on the Keizerstraat in Scheveningen, archaeologists from the Municipality of The Hague uncovered a centuries‑old cemetery surrounding the Old Church. In this exhibition, The Hague Archaeology invites you to explore the lives of the people of Scheveningen in the 16th and 17th centuries. Who were they? How did they live, work, and die?

Discover the stories behind 151 excavated graves, from children to villagers who reached an advanced age. View remarkable finds such as an engagement ring, centuries‑old clothing fragments, and even the grave of a small dog. The bones reveal traces of hard labour, illness, and the traditions that shaped daily life. You will also learn more about burial rituals, taboos within the cemetery, and unusual graves at the edge of the community.
