Erwin de Vries

Museum Beelden aan Zee presents a special retrospective exhibition of Surinamese artist Erwin de Vries (1929-2018), on the occasion of 50 years of Suriname's independence. This exhibition offers a unique opportunity to discover the multifaceted oeuvre of De Vries, with a focus on his sculpture, for which works have been selected from various collections, most of which have not been shown before.
Erwin de Vries, known for the Nationaal Monument Slavernijverleden in Amsterdam, made his name as a sculptor and painter with works reflecting his Caribbean background. His art shows a tremendous zest for life, focusing on human experience, eroticism and women. De Vries' colourful paintings and expressive sculptures offer a powerful view of earthly life and the impact of its culture and history.
