Toban
With TOBAN dance isn’t just movement; it’s a voice of resistance and resilience. This new creation by choreographer Mohamed Yusuf Boss – under the moniker X_YUSUF_BOSS – takes you on a journey to the complexities of experiencing unequal opportunities.
What it’s like to not belong to the dominant group
Furthermore, TOBAN explores the idea that you can always be who you want to be; except outside forces strive to limit and mold you. Like the legendary James Baldwin once emphatically said: ‘You have to choose who you are and force the world to deal with you, not with its idea of you.’
TOBAN initially started as a deep seated research of the personal stories of Mohamed himself, the performers and the kids who participated in Mohamed’s previous project HIDDEN. These stories – collected during exchanges in Groningen,The Netherlands and Katlehong, South Africa, make up the emotional fuel for TOBAN. The talented cast of six dancers – three Dutch and three South African – bring these stories to life on stage.
TOBAN invites you to participate in an intimate exploration of what it means to not belong to the dominant group.
