Amidst the hustle and bustle of the Transvaal neighbourhood, about a five-minute walk from the Haagse Markt, lies a green oasis of tranquillity: De Woelige Stal urban farm. This farm has a rich history. When it opened in 1973, it was the first urban farm in an urban area.
Today, the farm is home to cows, goats, sheep, chickens, rabbits and guinea pigs. Children can brush the animals in the meadow and stroke the rabbits in the petting corner. Every afternoon, children are welcome to help feed the animals. And they’re more than welcome to help clean the pens. If they’ve still got energy to spare, they can let off steam in the playground.
De Woelige Stal urban farm isn’t just for children, of course. Everyone is welcome to enjoy this lovely spot! With all its green nooks and crannies, it’s also a lovely place for wild bees (Flower Garden) and small soil-dwelling creatures (Little Creatures’ Paradise). There are nesting boxes hanging in the trees, which blue tits and great tits love to use.
Activities
At the Woelige Stal, activities are regularly organised for young and old. For example, a few times a year, anyone can help clear up litter in the neighbourhood during a pleasant walk in the park with Scotty the goat. And every spring, everyone is welcome to come and watch the sheep being shorn.
Swapping and reusing
In the farm’s classroom, there is a swap point for toys, books and children’s boots. And in the farmyard, there are bins where you can drop off used textiles, cooking fat and small broken electrical appliances. In the Worm Hotel, organic waste is turned into compost. Accessibility
The best way to get to De Woelige Stal is by bike or public transport. Tram lines 6, 11 and 12 stop within walking distance of the farm.
