Johan van Oldenbarnevelt was Grand Pensioner of the States of Holland during the 80-year war. He worked with Maurits of Orange for a long time but due to his opinionated nature became the victim of a political process engineered by Maurits, which led to his subsequent execution at the Binnenhof. The bronze statue was created on a natural stone base by the sculptor Wenckebach.
