Positions: Unearthing
6 Feb 2026 - 3 May 2026
Exhibition
On February 6, Stroom Den Haag will open its anniversary exhibition Positions Unearthing. In this special exhibition, four artists from The Hague—Roger Anis, Marie Civikov, Priyageetha Dia, and Ben Yau—bring hidden stories, forgotten histories, and underexposed perspectives back to the surface.
Four artists from The Hague unearth hidden stories
The artists take a human and investigative approach. They delve into personal archives, memories, and historical sources that are in danger of disappearing. What they uncover connects individual experiences with broader social themes that are still relevant today.
Priyageetha Dia uses AI-generated images and sounds to give a voice back to plantation workers who have disappeared from collective memory. Ben Yau reconstructs the events surrounding the 1948 Batang Kali massacre using declassified documents and testimonies. Roger Anis focuses on local rituals surrounding the Nile and shows how these offer new perspectives on resistance, solidarity, and ecological care. Marie Civikov transforms her grandmother's legacy, a sewing machine, into a source from which new family stories and memories emerge.
Positions Unearthing brings forgotten and repressed stories to light. The exhibition enriches our view of the past and invites us to discover new forms of connection in the present. A poignant and topical exhibition at Stroom Den Haag that shows how art can dig, reveal, and connect.
