Martin Koole - New Paintings
2 Aug - 26 Aug
Exhibition
Thinking about your own position as a painter among colleagues is probably something that regularly plays through your mind when you are working within this métier. It is therefore not at all strange to reflect aloud on your role, especially when you exhibit again within the walls of Pulchri Studio.
Finding your own style is often an important process in a painter's development. It can give you a sense of fulfilment and identity, as a reflection of who you are and how you express yourself to the world. But the moment your style has matured and is well received by audiences, the question may arise: has my style development now stalled? Is style rigidity looming? Is eventual resignation to themes and style actually a problem? Many painters - and not the least - did so without restraint. For them, it was a period of 'reaping', after years of sowing and searching.
An emotional 'end point' in your development does not necessarily have to be negative. Once you have found a recognisable visual language, you can continue to refine it and still reveal an evolutionary line. This way, your visual ability continues to grow. In addition, as a painter, you may find the craft more important than being an artist. Self-expression, innovation or research are then less guiding, without making you feel disloyal to your artistic integrity.
For an artist, introspection is not an end in itself, but a powerful tool. It helps you find internal truth, meaning and authenticity - and then transform it into a formal language that resonates with others.
