Delve into the history of music café De Paap and you’ll discover a breeding ground for The Hague’s pop scene. With its rock-oriented focus and a stage for bands, the café filled a gap: at the time, The Hague had hardly any medium-sized venues. Both budding and experienced musicians found an enthusiastic audience there.
De Paap Music Café: a breeding ground for talent from The Hague
The television recordings of *De Vrienden van Amstel Live* brought Dutch artists to *De Paap* and gave the music café nationwide recognition. The breakthroughs of Anouk, Billy the Kid, Kane and DI-RECT also put The Hague’s pop scene firmly in the spotlight. During the Marlboro Flashbacks, Dutch and Flemish bands performed the repertoire of legendary bands from the past. Van Dik Hout and Golden Earring also took to the stage. Billy the Kid, Kane and DI-RECT returned regularly. Cover bands also left their mark on De Paap. Among others, Shaky Ground, Jewelste and The Jags got the crowd moving.
