Alexandra van Dijk – Book Launch In de schaduw van de bevrijding
Nationaal Monument Oranjehotel in The Hague is the setting for the launch of Alexandra van Dijk's new book In de schaduw van de bevrijding. On Wednesday 26 August 2026, the author and invited speakers explore a lesser-known chapter of the Second World War: what happened inside the Scheveningen detention complex once the Netherlands was liberated.
Most people know the Scheveningen detention complex as the 'Oranjehotel', the place where the occupying forces held political prisoners during the war. Far fewer know what came next. After liberation, the same cells were filled with thousands of suspected collaborators. Alexandra van Dijk dug into inspection reports, witness accounts and personal documents to reconstruct that period: how did the pursuit of justice unfold, what abuses came to light, and what are the consequences that continue to reverberate today?

The programme starts at 15:30, with doors open from 15:00. Bert Theuermann, Ambassador of Austria, will speak about international cooperation in prosecuting war crimes and crimes against humanity. Michael Schuling, chair of Stichting Werkgroep Herkenning, will share his perspective from years of work on recognition and redress. Together, they place the book in a broader European context.

Published by BLKVLD Uitgevers, the book is closely connected to the exhibition of the same name currently on display at Nationaal Monument Oranjehotel. After the presentation, copies will be available in the museum shop. Registration for the book launch is required and will be handled on a first-come, first-served basis; places are limited.
