Mohammed Sami
KM21 is proud to present the first solo exhibition in the Netherlands by Mohammed Sami. His enigmatic, evocative paintings explore the unreliability or fragility of memory.
Although his scenes never show figures, a human presence is always palpable, whether in claustrophobic domestic interiors, haunted landscapes or fraught everyday objects. In his work, Sami draws on personal experiences and memories. However, the ambiguity of the representations (what are we looking at?) ensures that they transcend the individual level and refer to universal feelings of melancholy, mourning, longing and displacement.
Mohammed Sami (b 1984, Baghdad, Iraq) lives and works in London. He studied at the Institute of Fine Arts in Baghdad, the Ulster University-Belfast School of Art and Goldsmiths College in London. Recently, his work has been at Blenheim Palace, Woodstock; MoMA, New York; Tate Britain, Camden Art Centre and Hayward Gallery, London, among others.
