This year's Movies that Matter Festival, one of the world's leading human rights film festivals, will take place from 20 March to 28 March.

Film and debate festival on human rights and social justice

As every year, for nine days the auditoriums of Filmhuis Den Haag and Theater aan het Spui will be filled with over 90 films, programmes and debates focusing on human rights, social issues and socially engaged film.

Competitions

The Movies that Matter Festival presents a total of nine awards across various competitions. The Activist section screens documentaries about the work and lives of human rights defenders. Camera Justitia focuses on the importance of the rule of law and the fight against impunity. The third competition programme is Dutch Movies Matter, featuring Dutch feature films and documentaries that broaden our perspective on human rights.

Awards

Furthermore, international juries select a winner for the Grand Jury Documentary and Grand Jury Fiction, respectively the best documentary and fiction film. The Students’ Choice Award is chosen by a student jury from Leiden University. In addition, this year the Shorts Award will be presented for the best short film. All visitors can also vote for the films they have seen. The film with the highest score wins the Audience Award. The Education Award is also presented by a jury of school pupils and vocational college students to the most educational film.
