Stone
27 Jan 2027 - 27 Jun 2027
From 27 January to 27 June 2027, Museum Beelden aan Zee presents STONE. The exhibition shows how artists such as Barbara Hepworth, Naum Gabo, Louise Bourgeois, Richard Long, Alicja Kwade and Navid Nuur continually re-examine and question the age-old material of stone.
Featuring over fifty masterpieces from international museum and private collections, the exhibition illustrates how, since the Second World War, stone has evolved from a classical sculptural medium into a vehicle for abstraction, conceptual art, spirituality and contemporary social issues.
37 artists from the Netherlands and abroad
The exhibition STONE showcases iconic artists such as Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore, Louise Bourgeois, Jean (Hans) Arp, Naum Gabo, Isamu Noguchi, Eduardo Chillida, Richard Long, Anish Kapoor, Ugo Rondinone and Alicja Kwade, alongside leading contemporary artists such as Claudia Comte, José Dávila, Tom Waugh, Abdus Salaam and Seung-taek Lee.
Within this international context, the Dutch tradition of sculpture also occupies an important place. Works by artists including Mari Andriessen, Jan Meefout, Leo de Vries, Piet Killaars, Jan van Munster and Femmy Otten demonstrate the versatility and quality of Dutch stone sculpture. Furthermore, artists who have been working from the Netherlands for many years, such as Thom Puckey, underscore the significance of the Netherlands as an international centre for sculpture, where craftsmanship, experimentation and artistic exchange come together.
At the heart of the exhibition lies the dialogue between Western and non-Western sculptural traditions. European, Japanese, Korean, African, North and South American artists approach stone from diverse cultural perspectives, bringing together influences from, amongst others, Japanese garden culture, Mono-ha, African spirituality and European modernist sculpture. The exhibition demonstrates how this artistic exchange across continents has contributed to the renewal of international sculpture and how the Netherlands plays a significant role in this.
Four thematic storylines
The exhibition is structured around four thematic storylines: The Body in Stone, The Landscape in Stone, Abstraction in Stone and The Thinking Stone. This framework explores stone as a medium for physicality, nature, abstract form, memory, ritual and conceptual thinking. From the human figure and Land Art to minimalist and philosophical works, a rich picture emerges of stone as a material in which geological time, human history and artistic imagination converge.
STONE demonstrates how one of the oldest materials in art history remains an exceptionally relevant medium today. In doing so, the exhibition offers a fresh perspective on the enduring significance of stone within global art history.
