Sukhishvili – Georgian National Ballet
Dance performance at the AFAS Circustheater in Scheveningen: the Georgian National Ballet Sukhishvili brings a programme of folk dance, craftsmanship and more than eighty years of family history to The Hague.
The Georgian National Ballet Sukhishvili has been active for more than eighty years and is recognised worldwide as the definitive reference point for Georgian folk dance. Iliko and Nino Sukhishvili founded the company in 1945. What began as a pioneering effort to preserve Georgian dance tradition grew into an international phenomenon. Today, the third generation of the family leads the company: the grandchildren of the founders, who are not simply maintaining the legacy but actively developing it further.
Eighty years of choreography on one stage
The programme in The Hague brings together highlights from the company's entire history. These are not arbitrary choices: they are works that have defined the choreographic identity of Sukhishvili, and that have been performed at venues including the Metropolitan Opera in New York and La Scala in Milan. The New York Times called them the 'Eighth Wonder of the World', the Daily Telegraph described them as a 'hurricane on stage', and Le Figaro wrote about 'an energy that gets an entire hall on its feet'. That reputation has been built in front of millions of audience members across multiple continents.
