Regular carillon performances are given on the carillon in the tower of the Grote Kerk. City carillonneur Gijsbert Kok plays the carillon of the St. Jacobstoren. You can enjoy a programme featuring a wide range of music styles. The performances can be clearly heard in the Nutstuin (entrance on Jan Hendrikstraat) or around the tower. Occasionally, there is a livestream on the YouTube channel of the Stichting Carillon Den Haag.
History
For centuries, it was played in the Hague Tower on market days. The instruction, drawn up 22 January 1742, shows that it had to be played for at least an hour on Mondays and Fridays from 11am. After the tower and carillon restoration between 1951 and 1957, Wednesdays were added to the weekly playing times. Since then, the current playing times have applied.
Listening place
The centre of The Hague has a beautiful location where carillon playing from the Hague Tower can be heard in peace and quiet. Thanks to financial support from Fonds 1818, a neglected car park was professionally transformed into a lively, beautiful city garden (Nutstuin), accessible to everyone free of charge on weekdays. The entrance is on Jan Hendrikstraat. Here, you can not only enjoy the music but also indulge in a healthy breakfast or a delicious lunch at Café Soof. Benches have also been placed around the Grote Kerk with beautiful planting where you can take a seat to listen quietly.
