Reclining figures
27 Jun - 25 Oct
The exhibition Reclining Figures brings together a unique selection of sculptures centred on one of the oldest and most recognisable motifs in sculpture: the reclining figure. Since ancient times, this theme has symbolised not only rest and reflection, but also the intrinsic connection between humanity and its environment.
In modern art, the motif of the reclining figure was given a fresh interpretation by Henry Moore, who used the reclining figure to explore the complex relationship between the human body and the landscape. Following in his footsteps, artists such as Charlotte van Pallandt, Mimmo Paladino and Hans Opdebeeck each gave their own personal interpretation of the theme, experimenting with different forms, materials and techniques.
This exhibition offers a richly varied overview of both abstract and figurative approaches to the reclining figure in modern and contemporary sculpture, and demonstrates how this timeless motif continues to inspire innovation, dialogue and deeper exploration within the visual arts.
