In the autumn of 2026, the Mauritshuis and the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza will exchange part of their collections for the first time. Both museums will simultaneously lend 25 masterpieces to each other, enabling visitors in The Hague to admire exceptional paintings from the Spanish collection.

The exhibition brings together works by artists who are rarely, if ever, represented in Dutch museums. On display are, amongst others, paintings by Jan van Eyck, Albrecht Dürer, El Greco, Bronzino, Antonello da Messina and Piero della Francesca.

Love between two museums

The exhibition celebrates the long-standing relationship between the Mauritshuis and the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza. Building on a foundation of mutual trust, both museums have selected works from each other’s collections for this unique exchange.

The theme of love runs through the exhibition as a common thread, referring not only to the collaboration between the museums, but also to the stories told in the paintings.

Love as a unifying theme

The selected works depict various forms of love: from infatuation, connection and intimacy to longing, loss and grief. Although the paintings date from the 15th and 16th centuries, the emotions they portray are recognisable and timeless.

Bringing these themes together creates a unique encounter between works of art from different countries, traditions and periods.

Unique masterpieces from Madrid

Many of the paintings on display rarely leave Spain. This exhibition therefore offers a unique opportunity to view a selection of highlights from one of Europe’s most important art collections here in the Netherlands.

The full list of works will be announced at a later date.
