Abstract bronze sculpture with rounded shapes, surrounded by green leaves.

Sculptor Kim Kroes is presenting the exhibition Ode to Women in the courtyard garden of Pulchri Studio. The exhibition consists of marble and bronze sculptures in which the female form takes centre stage.

About the exhibition

Kim Kroes has been working in Pietrasanta, Italy, for over twenty years; a town renowned for its sculptural tradition and Carrara marble. Here, he mainly creates marble sculptures, with women as a recurring theme.

The exhibition Ode to Women presents an overview of his work. Fifteen sculptures are on display in the courtyard of Pulchri Studio, mainly female torsos carved from various types of stone, as well as a bronze sculpture.

Working with natural stone

Stone plays an important role in the creation of his sculptures. The natural veins, colours and textures help to determine the form and composition. Whilst sculpting, Kim Kroes draws inspiration from the properties of the material.

He has been working at Studio Galeotti in Pietrasanta since 2019. There, he makes use of the expertise, machinery and various types of stone available. As well as the well-known Carrara marble, he also works with unusual types of stone, such as fossilised stone from China and natural stone from Portugal.

One of the most striking works is Venus (2024), made from black fossilised stone with natural white patterns. This stone gives the sculpture a contemporary look.
