From 14 to 23 August 2026, the pop-up museum ‘75 Years of Moluccans in the Netherlands’ at Lange Voorhout in The Hague tells the story of the Moluccan community. Six shipping containers feature historical photographs, portraits and personal family stories.

IIn 2026, it will be 75 years since more than 12,500 Moluccan soldiers of the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army (KNIL) and their families came to the Netherlands. For many people, the history of Moluccans in the Netherlands begins with their arrival in 1951. However, Moluccans had already settled in The Hague before 1951. The pop-up museum presents this history from different perspectives.

What can you expect at the pop-up museum?

The pop-up museum consists of six shipping containers featuring historical photographs, portraits and personal family stories. One container is dedicated specifically to 75 years of Moluccans in The Hague.

The story of Moluccans in The Hague

The history of Moluccans in The Hague began before 1951. Moluccans were already living, studying and working in the city. The Hague did not have a Moluccan residential centre, barracks camp or designated Moluccan neighbourhood. Through stories from local families, the exhibition shows how the Moluccan community in the city developed over the years.

The pop-up museum ‘Moluccans in the Netherlands’ was commissioned by the Municipality of The Hague and created by Stichting Maluku Den Haag and Stichting Moluks Erfgoed.
