Fado is known for its melancholy, but that's only part of the story. In Verliefd op Portugal, FADOpelos2 shows how joy, poetry and rhythm are equally defining qualities of this Portuguese musical genre. Singer Iris Feijen and guitarist Tiago Lageira alternate classic fado pieces with new original work that sounds fresh and accessible without turning its back on tradition.
Iris Feijen: from Schagen to Lisbon
Iris Feijen grew up in Schagen, but her heart belongs to Portugal. In the show, she takes audiences through the alleyways of Lisbon and back to her childhood, where her love of Portuguese music began. After winning the SBS singing competition We Want More in 2020 and recording a duet with her idol Mariza, FADOpelos2 established itself on the Dutch theatre circuit. Several successful tours followed, and the ambitions keep growing: Iris dreams of one day performing at a sold-out Koninklijk Theater Carré.
Fado at the Rijswijkse Schouwburg
The show was originally planned for a smaller hall, but demand called for more space. Verliefd op Portugal now plays in the Grand Hall of the Rijswijkse Schouwburg, with open seating. For those not yet familiar with fado, this evening opens the door to a world that surprises: warmer, more colourful and more varied than expected.
