Discover the Mexican tradition of Día de los Muertos during a cultural evening in The Hague on Monday 2 November 2026. Learn about the meaning of the Day of the Dead and enjoy Mexican music, food and traditions.

Día de los Muertos, also known as the Mexican Day of the Dead, is a centuries-old tradition in which families remember and honour loved ones who have passed away. They do this with colourful altars, flowers, music, food and personal objects. During this cultural evening organised by Stichting Alma Latina Cultura y Comunidad, you can discover the stories and customs behind this tradition.

What can you expect during Día de los Muertos?

Together with a Mexican guest artist, you will learn about the origins and meaning of Día de los Muertos. You can help create a traditional ofrenda: a memorial altar decorated with flowers, photographs and symbolic objects. Discover what these objects represent and why they are important.

The evening also includes a Catrina and Catrín costume competition, where participants can show their colourful outfits. A face painter will create traditional Día de los Muertos make-up. There will also be Mexican music and food, with opportunities to share stories and meet other visitors.

A Mexican tradition for everyone

Everyone is welcome, even if you are not familiar with Día de los Muertos. You can dress up in a traditional Catrina or Catrín outfit or simply come along to learn more about Mexican culture.

The evening focuses on family, memories and connection. It is an opportunity to explore different cultures and reflect on life and loved ones who have passed away.
