For the first time in over eighty years, Mondrian’s last two masterpieces are on display together in the Netherlands. The exhibition brings together Victory Boogie Woogie and Broadway Boogie Woogie, showcasing how New York changed his art forever.

‘A once-in-a-lifetime exhibition not to be missed.’
Margriet Schavemaker, Director of the Kunstmuseum Den Haag

This exhibition brings together the iconic paintings Victory Boogie Woogie and Broadway Boogie Woogie by Piet Mondrian. It is the first time since 1946 that both works have been displayed side by side in the Netherlands.

The exhibition is a collaboration between Kunstmuseum Den Haag and The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. In addition to the two famous paintings, ten so-called transatlantic works are on display: paintings that Mondrian took with him from Europe to New York and developed further there.

During his stay in New York, Mondrian was inspired by the rhythm, energy and music of the city. Influenced by boogie-woogie, he experimented with colour, composition and materials. This led to his final and most innovative works.

Through the use of augmented reality, materials research and 3D replicas, visitors gain an insight into Mondrian’s working methods. Personal documents are also on display, including material relating to his flight from London to New York during the Second World War.

Café Society and the influence of boogie-woogie

A highlight of the exhibition is the reconstruction of Café Society, a legendary New York club where black and white artists and patrons came together. It was here that Mondrian discovered boogie-woogie, a musical style that became a major source of inspiration for his work.

Visitors are invited to discover this music for themselves and experience its influence on Mondrian’s art.
