Flip Noorman performing on stage during his tribute to Shane MacGowan and The Pogues

Music show Flip Noorman zingt Shane MacGowan (The Pogues) at Theater Ludens, his distinctive tribute to the frontman of Irish punk band The Pogues, who passed away in 2023.

Shane MacGowan was no ordinary musician. As the frontman of The Pogues, he fused punk energy with ancient Irish folk melodies in the 1980s, creating a sound entirely in a category of its own. His lyrics about immigrant life, drinking, love, and decay were admired by the likes of Nick Cave, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, and Sinéad O'Connor. Fairytale of New York still tops the Christmas charts in England and Ireland every single year. MacGowan passed away in November 2023, but his songs live on.

Flip Noorman as tribute artist

Flip Noorman first discovered The Pogues as a teenager and never lost his passion for their music. In this show, he interprets MacGowan's work in his own distinctive way, just as he previously did with Leonard Cohen and Tom Waits. His Leonard Cohen tribute earned him five stars from Dutch newspaper Trouw: "Noorman accomplishes this feat with flying colours." He has proven more than once that he knows how to do justice to great songwriters without simply imitating them.

Flip Noorman sings The Pogues in The Hague

The performance at Theater Ludens includes an interval drink. As Bruce Springsteen once said: a hundred years from now, people will still be singing the songs of MacGowan and The Pogues. That is a statement Noorman is more than happy to put to the test.
