Our image of a country is shaped by the stories that reach us. Although conflicts and natural disasters appear in European news from time to time, the stories of people living through these crises often remain unheard.

The Red Cross and Makmende Media joined forces to give precisely those stories a platform. In Sudan, Botswana, Liberia, and Mali, we asked people what life looks like through their eyes.

In the exhibition Humanity Up Close, from October 12 to 26, 2026, the Red Cross brings their stories together. Six individuals offer a glimpse into their lives through photographs they took themselves. Some photos refer to difficult memories, while others show the hope and happiness they find in everyday life.

They are people just like you and me, leading lives that may sometimes seem unfamiliar, but are often very recognizable. In the exhibition, you get to know these people as if you were having a conversation with them yourself. Before you know it, you see the world a little through someone else’s eyes, and that actually feels very familiar.

The exhibition will be officially opened by Mayor Jan van Zanen on October 14. The opening is part of an event and accompanied by a documentary screening and a panel discussion. Click here for more information and to reserve your spot.
