There is a particular sense of tranquillity that both Japanese and Nordic design strive for: a space stripped of the superfluous, warmed by what remains. This is Japandi. The Vocal Ensemble Chordiality brings this aesthetic to life through sound.
In the Dutch premiere of Japanese Seasons, the young Swedish composer Alvin Vikman sets Japanese poems to a Scandinavian soundscape. Another Swedish composer, Sven-David Sandström, combines sensual poetry with a minimalism that gives way to beautiful melodies in *Four Songs of Love*. For Toru Takemitsu, one of Japan’s greatest composers, nature itself is the subject. Whilst his choral works, set to his own texts, are so beloved that they have become new folk songs, composer and jazz pianist Jukka Linkola returns to the source: he draws on traditional Finnish folk culture and poetry, with songs about togetherness, about nature, and here and there a healthy dose of humour.
