Three illuminated human sculptures in a display case. Laura Dzelzytė, The Keeper of Crossed Roads

The Keeper of Crossed Roads at the Beelden aan Zee museum invites you to a spatial experience featuring a series of wax sculptures by the British-Lithuanian artist Laura Dzelzytė. Drawing on her personal experience of migration, her long-standing involvement with public collections and her research into intangible heritage, she explores themes such as home, memory and cultural heritage.

Dzelzytė regards cultural objects as living vessels of human experiences. By casting them in wax, she gives these objects a new lease of life and explores how memories and cultural heritage can change without losing their origins. The exhibition runs from 4 November 2026 to 10 January 2027 at the Beelden aan Zee museum.

The Keeper of Crossed Roads forms part of an ongoing series in which Dzelzytė translates architectural fragments, everyday objects, religious artefacts and forms from folk culture into wax.  The starting point for the exhibition is a Rūpintojėlis (Pensive Christ) carved from oak by the Lithuanian folk sculptor Algirdas Butkevičius.

First exhibition of wax sculptures

It is the first exhibition at the Beelden aan Zee museum to be dedicated to wax sculptures. For  Dzelzytė, wax is a material that is constantly in flux. This quality ties in with her exploration of the ways in which cultural heritage is passed on and takes on new meaning over time. No two casts are identical to the original; each bears traces of its origins, yet takes on a form of its own. Her works thus form a living archive of migration and memory.
