Little Barrie resists easy categorisation. Rootsy blues, funky grooves, psychedelic guitar lines and soulful vocals shift and intertwine without the music ever losing its sense of direction. The band's influences span both sides of the Atlantic. Their song structures carry the taut energy of the great British rock tradition, but in tone and feel it is the American heritage of funk, soul and blues that takes centre stage. The result is music that feels both familiar and surprising, built on recognisable forms but filled with sharp details that only fully reveal themselves on the second or third listen. Their latest album Gravity Freeze gives a strong sense of where the band is heading.

Little Barrie's way of working is resolutely hands-on. Early versions of songs are recorded in bare-bones conditions, surrounded by loose drum kits and random materials, far removed from any polished studio setting. That raw first layer remains audible in the finished tracks and shapes much of the character of their live shows. On stage you won't find a slickly packaged product, but a band that visibly enjoys playing, enjoys the tension that builds, and understands the chemistry that emerges between three people who know exactly what they mean to each other musically. That makes an evening in the Kleine Zaal at PAARD a show worth catching.
