Michael Moore Universe Quartet
On Friday 10 January, the Michael Moore Universe Quartet will play at the Koorenhuis! Moore combines the best of several worlds: The finesse of the American jazz tradition, the anarchy of New Dutch Swing and the quirkiness of folk music from all over the world.
A groundbreaking mix of jazz and world music
The versatile alto saxophonist, clarinetist, composer and bandleader Michael Moore is an improviser pur sang. The US-born Moore (1954), who has lived and worked in the Netherlands for over forty years, is a composer who takes improvisation as the basis for his music. He made his name with groups such as Available Jelly, the ICP Orchestra, Fragile, 4tet and Clusone Trio while gaining international recognition with his trio with Fred Hersh and Mark Helias. In 1986, he won the Boy Edgar Prize and in 1991 he founded the record label Ramboy Records to record mainly his own music.
Whereas Moore, a true world musician, had previously mixed jazz with traditional or popular music from Suriname, Albania, Portugal, Croatia and South Africa, with his Michael Moore Universe Quartet he plays, among other things, his interpretation of choro, old Brazilian salon music that resembles ragtime. It is fast and above all very cheerful music despite the fact that the name is Portuguese for mourning.
