Interior of Gallery Prince Willem V with paintings hung closely together on the walls

The permanent collection of Gallery Prince Willem V is on display in this historic museum on the Buitenhof in The Hague. In the 18th century, this was where the first publicly accessible museum in the Netherlands opened its doors.

When Prince Willem V opened his painting collection to the general public, it was unlike anything else in the Netherlands at the time. Ordinary citizens could walk past walls full of paintings, right next to the Binnenhof. That tradition lives on today at Gallery Prince Willem V.

The collection at Gallery Prince Willem V

The paintings are still displayed as they were in the 18th century: hung close together, from floor to ceiling. This creates a very different atmosphere from the spacious layouts of modern museums. The collection brings together works assembled by Prince Willem V, with pieces closely connected to Dutch and Flemish Golden Age painting.
