Royal traditions in focus – Letters of credence
29 Mar - 31 Dec
ExhibitionExperience royal traditions up close. In The Hague, horses and carriages make their way to Noordeinde Palace, while the military honour guard beats the drums and national anthems echo across the square. The centuries-old letters of credence ceremony is a magnificent spectacle, and now you can learn more about it in the new showcase exhibition Royal Traditions in Focus: Letters of Credence. Admire remarkable historical objects, such as a replica of George Washington’s letter of credence and the ceremonial uniform of the King’s adjutant.
The letters of credence ceremony
As a new ambassador arrives at Noordeinde Palace, national anthems echo across the square while the military honour guard presents a salute. During the ceremony, the ambassador hands over two letters to the King, officially confirming the diplomatic ties between the two nations. This impressive ritual, which takes place approximately once a month, can partly be observed from the square and is now further explored in the showcase exhibition Royal Traditions in Focus: Letters of Credence at Noordeinde 64.
The exhibition
This exhibition features remarkable objects from the Royal Collections, including a replica of the letter of credence that George Washington sent to Stadtholder William V and the ceremonial uniform of the King’s adjutant. Flags and photographs bring the ceremony to life. The Royal Collections, which safeguard the heritage of the House of Orange-Nassau, celebrate their 200th anniversary this year. This exhibition offers the public a rare insight into one of the Netherlands’ most formal and historic royal traditions.
