On Friday 23 October, British music critic and writer Simon Reynolds will be a guest at BorderKitchen in The Hague. During this special evening, he will be in conversation with Lee Brackstone, a publisher at White Rabbit, about his latest book, *Still in a Dream: Shoegaze, Slackers and the Reinvention of Rock, 1984–1994*.
From shoegaze to alternative rock
Simon Reynolds has been writing about pop music and pop culture for forty years and has interviewed many major artists over the years. He has chronicled the rise of genres such as post-punk, rave and electronic music, and has written influential books including *Energy Flash*, *Rip It Up and Start Again* and *Retromania*.
In *Still in a Dream*, Reynolds delves into the musical period from 1984 to 1994. In the years leading up to grunge’s major breakthrough, new sounds and genres emerged that changed alternative rock forever. Bands such as My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, Cocteau Twins, the Pixies and Dinosaur Jr. played a key role in this. Their music is now being rediscovered by a new generation of listeners.
During BorderKitchen, Simon Reynolds and Lee Brackstone will discuss forty years of listening, writing and pop culture. How does a new musical movement emerge? Why do old genres keep coming back?
