A seascape featuring tall rocks and birds flying overhead.

From 3 October 2026, the Museum Panorama Mesdag will present the first major Dutch retrospective of the artist Betzy Akersloot-Berg.

In the autumn of 2026, Museum Panorama Mesdag will present an overview of the work of Betzy Akersloot-Berg (1850–1922). The exhibition will run from 3 October 2026 to 28 February 2027. More than 60 paintings will be on display, supplemented by sketches, drawings, travel objects and letters. The works come from collections in the Netherlands and abroad. The exhibition has been compiled in collaboration with Museum Tromp’s Huys on Vlieland.

A life by the sea

Akersloot-Berg was an independent artist who specialised in seascapes. She travelled alone through Norway, painting coastlines and storms. She studied in Munich and Paris and became involved in artistic circles in The Hague. In her later years, she worked on the island of Vlieland, where her former home now serves as a museum.

Pupil of Mesdag

During her time in The Hague, Akersloot-Berg was a pupil of Hendrik Willem Mesdag. Like her teacher, she painted the sea at Scheveningen in the open air. Her work is characterised by technique, use of light and a sense of atmosphere.

Revaluation

This exhibition recognises Akersloot-Berg as an independent and innovative artist. She worked internationally and was part of a period in which female artists were rarely visible.
