Ruben Lundgren - Flowers in the Mirror
4 Apr 2026 - 23 Aug 2026
Exhibition
As a 21-year-old photography student, Ruben Lundgren (Netherlands, 1983) left for China and decided to stay there. His struggle with his queer identity led to a lasting fascination with the medium of photography and the tension between image and reality. The façade he himself drops turns out to be a remarkable metaphor for the country in which he allows himself to drift.
In the exhibition Flowers in the Mirror, Lundgren looks back on more than twenty years of working and living in China. Throughout his career, Lundgren has explored numerous photographic styles without losing his own perspective, intuition or sense of wonder. On display is an overview of his best-known projects, including a number of previously unpublished works. The exhibition also shows the working processes behind his projects and the many photobooks he has created, using dummies, magazines and videos.
With contributions from Chinese curator He Yining and China correspondent Garrie van Pinxteren.
