Dancing with a work of visual art, somewhere between lament and exorcism

As a teenager, Courtney witnesses her mother’s death. For her, it is a horrific yet fascinating moment that clashes with the stylised, serene depictions of dead women in art and film. What is missing from these is the raw reality of grief and gender-based violence.  

In BANSHEE, she and her friends Inci Gül Civelekoğlu and Olympia Kotopoulos form an inseparable dance with the moving sculptures of visual artist Jesus Canuto Iglesias. These sculptures allude to instruments that were once used to discipline women, but which, in BANSHEE, instead uplift, support and inspire them. Celtic folk dance traditions are deconstructed, throats burst open, and a ritual emerges in which supernatural forces are invoked and vulnerability is celebrated.

Haunting soundscapes and Courtney’s first collaborative work

Bagpipe player Genevieve Murphy and noise musician Acidic Male join forces for BANSHEE in a haunting soundscape that sees dance torn between perseverance and rupture. And Courtney, internationally renowned for her solo work, is now, for the first time, joining forces with other performers to open a portal to a new mythological future.
